If anyone has been to my house, you’ve probably met Cynthia, my neighbor. She’s a little bit loud, and usually a little bit drunk, but she is honestly one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met, and even if she can be a handful from time to time, I have always felt like she is looking out for us.

She’s been asking me for ages to do some pictures of her, and I thought that this “Community” assignment would be the perfect opportunity.

Mateo Quintana is the only barber in the small community of Marfa, Texas. Born and raised in this town, he’s been running this same shop for over 30 years. He got that chair from his father, who was a barber in Marfa before him. I followed along to shoot photos as Matt Nuzzaco, a fellow Phoot Camper, received a hair cut and beard trim during our weekend visit. Follow the Phoot Camp blog to see everyone’s work.

I photographed the Electric Daisy Carnival in Vegas this weekend and was interested to see what it would be like after all the recent controversy. What I found was a lot of love, good energy and great music. Hopefully this image conveys some of that “community” feeling. (more photos here)

So this past week I revived the tradition of the backyard BBQ at my house. There’s a different quality to a BBQ than a dinner … seems there’s more a communal process to the whole affair, from building the fire, comparing BBQing techniques, preparing the food, serving drinks, playing music … everyone seemed to find a role.  Gathering around the fire to enjoy full plates of food we had prepared together was one of the warmest experiences I’ve had in a while.  The food just tasted better.

Title: Community

Assigner: Natalie Young

Description: “Sending in this assignment from Jazzfest in new orleans. Really enjoying the southern hospitality and great sense of community. And making me think about the different ways that we create or experience community (or lack thereof) depending on many social factors of culture, family, geography, tradition. And it’s inspiring this assignment. One word concept: “Community”… Interpret anyway you like … People, place, experience, idea, etc. “

Dan Busta - Loud

Revelation Is More Perilous Than Revolution - A production take on Loud, in collaboration with Artist Michelle Jane Lee. I originally wanted to do a totally obnoxious set with all color squares and then I remember looking at Michelle’s work at an artshow in the Brewery. I then approached her to work directly with me in a set collaboration, she agreed. In Michelle’s work all of her colored squares represent letters of the alphabet. Life Support Japan

I have been fortunate enough to be included in this wonderful project and wanted to share what is happening. For more details read below a statement from Crista Dix and visit Wall Space Gallery to purchase some amazing prints. Thank you.

“Natural disasters happen all the time, like landslides, floods, earthquakes. We live on a planet that isn’t static. Friday, March 11th, we witnessed a natural disaster with a very human toll. The earthquake in Japan was of such magnitude that even the most prepared nation in the world to handle a disaster of this type was overwhelmed. It wasn’t the earthquake alone, which was devastating enough but watching a 30 foot high wall of mud and debris wipe entire communities away was beyond any ability I personally had to comprehend.

I had to do something. Aline Smithson, one of our gallery artists wanted to do something too. Ryan Nabulsi and Jennifer Schwartz joined the effort. Soon I was hearing from every part of our creative community that we wanted to reach out to help the people of Japan. Life Support Japan was created to bring assistance to those in Japan who need it.

We have selected two charities to benefit from the sales of these limited edition prints.

Direct Relief International, for help with medical supplies.
Habitat for Humanity Japan, to help in the rebuilding of communities in and around Sendai and northern Japan.

Artists from around the globe have donated limited editions, over 300 to date, and we will be consistently updating the images available.

Galleries from around the US are banding together for a series of benefits, for these two and other charities to benefit relief efforts in Japan. We will be posting information as it becomes available.

Thank you for your support and for being part of a global community.

Crista Dix + wall space gallery.”
