Title: Context
Assigner: Travis Commeau
Description: The set of circumstances, ideas or things that surround a concept and give it meaning. How context can twist perception and give something entirely new meaning or significance. Alternatively, how experiencing something without context can misinform, redefine or make alien something formerly familiar or vice versa.

When I was little my uncle’s girlfriend owned a farm in Upstate New York. My favorite animals were pigs, and every time we drove up to the farm I would pet and play with this one particular pig. Well one day I searched and searched and this particular pig was nowhere to be found. Later on, we were sitting at the dinner table, and I asked my uncle’s girlfriend where my favorite pig went. She looked down at my plate and said, “You’re eating him”.
Special thanks to Topsy Design for collaborating with me on this photo shoot! And thank you to Sam for assisting, Erica for doing the makeup and being a fabulous model, Adam for being another fabulous model, and Morgan for being a fabulous little model.

She’s been asking me for ages to do some pictures of her, and I thought that this “Community” assignment would be the perfect opportunity.

Mateo Quintana is the only barber in the small community of Marfa, Texas. Born and raised in this town, he’s been running this same shop for over 30 years. He got that chair from his father, who was a barber in Marfa before him. I followed along to shoot photos as Matt Nuzzaco, a fellow Phoot Camper, received a hair cut and beard trim during our weekend visit. Follow the Phoot Camp blog to see everyone’s work.

So this past week I revived the tradition of the backyard BBQ at my house. There’s a different quality to a BBQ than a dinner … seems there’s more a communal process to the whole affair, from building the fire, comparing BBQing techniques, preparing the food, serving drinks, playing music … everyone seemed to find a role. Gathering around the fire to enjoy full plates of food we had prepared together was one of the warmest experiences I’ve had in a while. The food just tasted better.

Title: Community
Assigner: Natalie Young
Description: “Sending in this assignment from Jazzfest in new orleans. Really enjoying the southern hospitality and great sense of community. And making me think about the different ways that we create or experience community (or lack thereof) depending on many social factors of culture, family, geography, tradition. And it’s inspiring this assignment. One word concept: “Community”… Interpret anyway you like … People, place, experience, idea, etc. “

Entitled “Route 66”
A shoot for Cadillac starting in the deserts of Lancaster, through “The Valley of Fire”, finishing on the old strip in Las Vegas. Shot with a “pre AI” Nikor lens selection from the 50’s to enhance the “35mm film look” of that era..
