Assignment: Oldest School

Assigner: Blake Sinclair

Description: When people find out I’m a photographer, they ask how I got in to it. And why I got in to it. Somewhere in the conversation, I think about the very first photograph I ever took. It might not be the EXACT photo, but it’s the one that comes to mind as the first. This month, recreate that photo. Or use it as inspiration. Bonus points if you can provide the actual photograph.

Blake Sinclair - Cover’d

I started shooting some still life lately, and figured this could be the cover of Wired. Possibly a story about fast food.

Blake Sinclair - Cross Processed

For the cross-processing assignment I went for the bleach-bypass look. In the past I experimented with this technique using film and chemicals, so I tweaked a digital image to match those washed out midtones and golden highlight details.

Blake Sinclair - Self Portrait

I started photographing my wife Jennifer every day with a single sheet of 4x5 film. The project will last for the entirety of her 3rd trimester, and I used one of the days to complete my “self portrait” assignment.

I used Chris Dibbles quiet, solid portraits as inspiration for the composition and mood.

Blake Sinclair - WWPJP for D+T Magazine

I photographed We Were Promised Jet Packs for Death + Taxes Magazine. Here’s a tear sheet, and some out-takes I liked.
